Why is research important?

Research is one of the four pillars of Planned Parenthood’s mission. Research supports the pillars of care, education, and advocacy. Research helps us find the best ways of providing care and education and how to be the best advocates we can be by better understanding the needs of our patients and the types of interventions that work for them. ​

Past Studies

TelAbortion Study

The goal of this study was to create a more accessible, patient-centered method of abortion where patients can obtain their medical abortion pills by mail (without needing an in-person appointment at a Planned Parenthood health center). 

This research study found that direct-to-patient telemedicine abortion service is safe, effective, and efficient.  Patients reported a high level of satisfaction with this delivery care model.

Liletta IUD Study 

Evaluation of a new Intrauterine Device, the Liletta was ultimately brought to market and approved for up to 8 years of use. This study showed that Liletta is a proven, long-term, highly effective, and reversible method of birth control. 

Asynchronous Medication Abortion Study

Medication Abortion ASAP was an innovative pilot research study that evaluated a streamlined way to provide medication abortion (abortion with pills) over the web.

This study evaluated the safety of medication abortion without a pretreatment ultrasound or pelvic exam. For qualifying patients, this study’s findings supported providing medication abortion care without an ultrasound screening throughout the PPRM affiliate.
