Planned Parenthood of Maryland Calls on Legislators to Safeguard and Expand Reproductive Healthcare Access during 2024 Legislative Session
For Immediate Release: Jan. 10, 2024
ANNAPOLIS, MD—Today, as the Maryland General Assembly kicks off the 2024 legislative session, Planned Parenthood of Maryland (PPM) recommits to advocating for policies that safeguard patients’ access to the essential reproductive health care services we provide and enable our staff and clinicians to continue offering that care to all those seeking it in our state.
PPM is proud of the legislative advances made over the past five years: Maryland created a robust telehealth infrastructure, removed barriers for qualified abortion providers, equitably covered abortion care, and protected patients and providers. But the work is not done.
PPM encourages legislators to continue strengthening and expanding our health care infrastructure and to again defend our patients and providers against the annual attacks on care from anti-abortion and anti-reproductive health actors.
Statement from Karen J. Nelson, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Maryland:
"In recent years, PPM’s advocacy has helped pave the way for legislation that has enhanced sexual and reproductive health care provision across our state. As a result of these bills, PPM now offers thousands of patients care each year via our telehealth platform. In November, Marylanders will now have the opportunity to enshrine the right to reproductive freedom and abortion in the state constitution rather than relying on federal protections.
Even as we celebrate these achievements, PPM is redoubling its efforts to fight the regressive agendas of anti-abortion forces. We are also proud to stand with our partners as they promote legislation to protect some of the most vulnerable communities PPM serves, including the Black and Latinx communities, undocumented people, transgender people and other members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and young people."
