Tuesday June 11, 2013 (DES MOINES, IA) – Planned Parenthood of the Heartland President and CEO Jill June released the following statement hailing Monday evening’s decision by the Obama Administration to drop the appeal to an April court ruling lifting the age and point of sale restrictions on emergency contraception:
“This is an historic moment for women’s health care. This long-overdue step forward will make emergency contraception available on store shelves to women of all ages. This decision will increase access to emergency contraception and help women quickly prevent an unintended pregnancy.
“Emergency contraception is safe and effective. When a woman fears she might become pregnant after her primary contraceptive has failed or she has had unprotected sex, she needs fast access to emergency contraception. This decision will eliminate some of the biggest barriers women face in obtaining emergency contraception when they need it, which means many more women will be able to prevent an unintended pregnancy.
“As a leading provider of women’s health care, Planned Parenthood knows firsthand how critical it is that women be able to get emergency contraception quickly and without hurdles. Increasing access to emergency contraception, without restrictions, will help more women get the health care they need, when they need it.”
