What does this mean for Texas and Louisiana?

Both Texas and Louisiana have laws banning abortion in nearly all circumstances that took effect after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. We cannot provide abortion in Texas or Louisiana, but we are here to help connect people to safe and legal care in other states and direct financial assistance for travel-related costs like gas, airfare, lodging, meals, and childcare.

Can I get an abortion in Texas/Louisiana?

The Supreme Court’s ruling on June 24, 2022 ended the federal constitutional right to abortion and allowed states like Texas and Louisiana to ban abortion.

We cannot provide abortion in Texas or Louisiana, but we are still here to help you. We can provide medically accurate information, ultrasounds for pregnancy dating, and help connect you to out-of-state abortion care. Planned Parenthood stands for care, and we are here with you. We are so sorry that this decision is making you face these hurdles just to get the health care you need. We know that banning abortion does not take away people’s need for abortion.

Is the abortion pill also illegal now?

Yes, the Supreme Court’s ruling removed the federal constitutional right to abortion and allowed states like Texas and Louisiana to ban care — that includes abortion procedures and the abortion pill/medication abortion.

Can I get an ultrasound to see how pregnant I am?

We completely understand. This ruling took away our fundamental human right to control our own bodies and handed that power to state lawmakers. It is devastating. We are angry, and we are fighting back.

You can donate to abortion funds that offer financial assistance to people traveling out of state for an abortion, give to Planned Parenthood, or go to the website bansoff.org to share your story and get involved in the fight to take back our right to control our health, bodies, and futures. Is emergency contraception/EC/Plan B still legal?

Yes, emergency contraception is still legal. Emergency contraception reduces the risk of pregnancy. It is not the abortion pill and it will not end a pregnancy.

All forms of contraception are still legal. Planned Parenthood health centers are open and providing sexual and reproductive health care including birth control and emergency contraception. Call 1-800-230-PLAN to make an appointment.

Can I still get an IUD? Is birth control still legal?

Yes, IUDs, emergency contraception, and all other forms of birth control are still legal. Planned Parenthood health centers are open and continue to provide sexual and reproductive health care, including IUDs and many other forms of birth control, for the people and communities who rely on us. Call 1-800-230-PLAN to make an appointment.

Can minors get an IUD?

A minor’s ability to get birth control depends on state laws. In Texas, a minor needs a parent or guardian’s consent to get an IUD. In Louisiana, a minor can get an IUD without consent from a parent/guardian. For more information or to schedule an appointment in one of our health centers, call 1-800-230-PLAN.

Pregnancy-related care is available in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

While we can no longer provide abortion care, we are still here for pregnancy-related services including pregnancy testing, information and counseling about all of your options, ultrasounds to date your pregnancy, evaluation for early pregnancy loss and miscarriage management, and pre- and post-abortion care.
