2024 Legislative Agenda

Fight. No Matter What.

Planned Parenthood is the nation’s leading provider of high-quality, affordable sexual and reproductive health care for all people, as well as the nation’s largest provider of sex education. In fiscal year 2023 alone, Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast provided 18,392 visits for family planning and primary care, 2,270 cancer screenings and prevention services, 14,108 birth control services and information, 28,565 STI tests, and 6,575 HIV prevention counseling and testing visits in Louisiana.

Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast believes that all Louisianans should have access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care, regardless of identity,  income level, or insurance status.

We push forward with one clear message: We won’t back down. No politician will attack reproductive health and rights without a fight. We will continue to shine a light on extremists and build a powerful movement for reproductive freedom in Louisiana. We have a clear vision for  the future we deserve, and we aren’t going anywhere.

Defend Against Further Attacks

Abortion is banned in Louisiana, but state lawmakers continue to attempt to further restrict access to care while refusing to mitigate the devastating harm they have wrought. We anticipate attacks on access to other basic reproductive health care like birth control, Louisianans’ ability to access abortion out-of-state, Planned Parenthood's ability to provide care in Louisiana, and access to education about sex and sexuality for young people. This session, PPGC will fight to:

  • Protect access to care for Louisianans with Medicaid coverage at their provider of choice.
  • Defend against further attacks on access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care and information for all Louisianans.

Support Access to Reproductive Health Care

Over the last decade, lawmakers have systematically chipped away at Louisianans’ access to preventive and lifesaving reproductive health care, launching political attacks that come with grave public health consequences. Since 2022, abortion has been banned in nearly all circumstances in Louisiana, worsening the state’s maternal health crisis that disproportionately harms Black women, people in rural areas, and people with low incomes. With our allies in the legislature, we will:

  • Advocate for what the majority of Louisianans support: restored and expanded access to reproductive health care, including abortion care, in our state.
  • Fight to expand comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care access to improve maternal health outcomes and reduce health disparities.

Support Intersectional Cross-Movement Efforts to Achieve Racial Equity and Justice for All People to Live Whole Lives

Planned Parenthood patients often face enormous hurdles to accessing health care. We understand that our fights and movements are connected – if you don’t feel safe and supported in your community, you can’t access the health care you need. We stand with our movement partners, our communities, and all Louisianans in the fight for our ability to live full, healthy lives – no matter what. Alongside our partners, we will fight to:

  • Protect and defend voting rights.
  • Advocate for democratic and transparent legislative processes.
  • Support efforts to address systemic inequality, including racial and gender disparities.
  • Defend against any legislation that denies LGBTQ+ individuals their fundamental human rights.
