Building Confidence, with Style

Fashion Design Program at In Control

Starting this autumn, and wrapping up next spring, teens in Rochester can take part in a program focused on fashion design hosted by In Control. Youth in this program will learn everything from basic sewing techniques, including how to set up and maintain a machine, to how to construct a garment, from selection of appropriate fabrics through couture finishing techniques.

Students will be guided through how to take a design from concept to finished garment over the course of 12 weeks. Culminating in a fashion show in April, participants will have the opportunity to model their creations on the runway.

Leading up to the fashion show, participants will also learn about marketing, branding, and trends. In preparation for the fashion show, teens will also work on how to strut their stuff—learning about posture while developing their self-esteem. At the big event, local artists provide services including hairdressing and makeup, helping the teens complete their looks.

Whether participants are looking to pursue a career in fashion design, or just want to pick up basic sewing skills while collaborating with their peers, In Control’s Fashion Design Program gives teens the resources and skills needed to create clothing that inspires, and the confidence to pursue their professional goals.
