PPCWNY has launched an affiliate-wide campaign to advocate for the Equal Rights Amendment – a proposed amendment to the New York State constitution that would protect the rights and reproductive freedoms we currently enjoy in this state, no matter how the political tides change.
You may have heard news that the Equal Rights Amendment has been temporarily removed from the ballot. State Assemblymember Marjorie Byrnes, a Livingston County representative with a legislative history of opposing abortion access and rights for LGBTQIA+ communities, launched a legal battle to get the ERA removed from the ballot and in early May, and an activist judge ruled that the New York State Senate made a procedural error when approving the Equal Rights Amendment.
More than 18 amendments have passed the same way the ERA did in the last 50 years -- and they all made it to the ballot for New Yorkers to vote on. The New York State Attorney General is appealing the judge’s ruling, and we are confident that the ERA will be on the ballot this November. We are continuing to work on the ERA campaign as passionately as ever knowing that this is the exact government overreach that the ERA will prevent. New Yorkers – not politicians, judges, or extremists – should be the decision-makers about our own bodies, rights, and futures.
But we need your help.
