Volunteers Needed

male_volunteer.jpgPlease consider making a difference in your community by volunteering for Sexual Assault and Crime Victims Services.

Volunteers learn the psychological aspects of sexual assault/sexual abuse, active listening and non-directive counseling techniques, and how to assist survivors of sexual assault and their families using crisis intervention skills.

Training includes a behind-the-scenes look at hospital emergency room sexual assault evidence collection and the criminal justice system that investigates and prosecutes sexual assault perpetrators.

Certified by New York State Department of Health, this comprehensive training course builds skills that may transfer to educational, career or personal goals.

Trained volunteers are “on call” a few shifts a month and may respond to hotline calls. Often, volunteers provide sexual assault survivors with phone counseling or referrals to support groups and other local services. Other times, they provide victims with in-person support and advocacy during a hospital exam or meeting with law enforcement. Volunteers may rely on seasoned staff members for consultation or assistance as needed.

Serving on the team creates a shared sense of purpose, develops friendship, and provides rewarding experiences. For more information contact l.sendra@ppmhchoices.org or 518.374.5353, ext. 2278.
