Sexually Transmitted Disease Testing & Treatment

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are very common; most STDs are curable and all are treatable.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are caused by infections that are passed from one person to another during sexual contact.

Many STDs have no symptoms, so people who are infected may not know they have an STD and unknowingly spread the infection to their partner. Lack of information, misconceptions and social stigma may keep people from getting tested.

There are many kinds of sexually transmitted diseases and infections. And they are very common. In fact, more than half of us will get one at some time in our lives.

The good news is we can protect ourselves and each other from STDs. Practicing safer sex allows you to reduce your risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases. Also if you've done anything that puts you at risk of infection, getting tested allows you to get any treatments you may need.

Planned Parenthood offers testing, diagnosis and treatment for STDs including:

Currently, St. Louis has top rankings in chlamydia and gonorrhea, and is number five in the nation for syphilis and HIV. Last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that one in four teenage females, ages 14 to 19, has an STD. Of the approximately 19 million new STDs that occur every year in the United States, most will go undiagnosed.
