Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin's 80th Anniversary
80 Years PPWI
For 100 years nationally, and for 80 years in Wisconsin, Planned Parenthood has been providing health care, education, and advocacy to keep people safe, healthy, and strong. Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin began in 1935, when volunteers came together to open a small "maternal health" center in Milwaukee. They were part of an emerging movement in support of birth control, women's rights, and equality. These dedicated men and women fought to secure reproductive rights -- something we're still fighting to protect a century later.
We know that when access to birth control and abortion services is limited, families suffer, and women die. Throughout our history, countless heroes have defended Planned Parenthood with courage and tenacity.
In celebration of our 100th and 80th Anniversaries, and to honor those who are proud to stand with us, we unveiled an astonishingly powerful image in fall of 2016 – an archetype, symbolic of the energy and courage that push us to rise above our challenges.
The "Goddess of Fierce Protection", designed by Wisconsin women artists, represents divine feminine power, strength in the face of negative forces, the alleviation of the suffering, and invincibility. No matter what angle you view her from, you're forced to look up to her. That's on purpose. She's proud. She radiates rays of light. She's peaceful and fierce all at once.
The Goddess of Fierce Protection is a visible testament of our dedication to take on the powers that would send us back to a time of reproductive injustice. – And we won't go back.
