WHAT: At Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood’s (UHPP) Roe v. Wade Celebration, Mayor Kathy M. Sheehan will receive UHPP’s annual Advocate for Choice award. UHPP proudly recognizes the City of Albany’s first female mayor with our award. Mayor Sheehan ran as a pro-choice candidate and numerous times, she has spoken out in support of all ten points of the Women’s Equality Act. In addition, she called out politicians who are opposed to WEA. Mayor Sheehan also established and implemented an Equity Agenda for the City to address economic, racial and social inequality. She previously served as the City’s Treasurer and Chief Fiscal Officer. Mayor Sheehan and her family are deeply committed to community service.  

WHERE: The Corning Tower Observation Deck, Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY

BACKGROUND: Nearly 100 guests, including local and state legislative leaders, clergy, healthcare and women’s health advocates will attend this annual celebration. The UHPP Advocate for Choice award recognizes individuals and organizations that have demonstrated extraordinary leadership for reproductive freedom and choice.

UHPP President/CEO Chelly Hegan said, “We are proud to recognize Mayor Sheehan’s commitment to reproductive rights and justice for women in our community. As the first female mayor of Albany, she is leading the way in implementing economic, racial and social equality.”

Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization serving Albany, Columbia, Greene and Rensselaer counties. Each year, patients make more than 10,000 visits to UHPP’s health centers in Albany, Hudson and Troy. UHPP offers a wide range of reproductive health services, including annual GYN exams, PAP tests, breast exams and self-exam instruction, colposcopy, cryosurgery, STI testing and treatment, birth control information and supplies, Emergency Contraception, pregnancy testing, first trimester, and referrals for adoption and prenatal care. UHPP annually provides Education sessions to more than 2,000 participants and advocates for high quality reproductive healthcare.

Past UHPP Advocate for Choice award recipients are NYS Senator Neil Breslin; Ronald Canestrari, who then served as a NYS Assemblymember; David Patterson, when he served as NYS Senate Minority Leader; Albany Medical Center’s Students for Choice; Shirley Gordon, former Executive Director of Family Planning Advocates of New York State; NYS Comptroller Tom DiNapoli; Denise King, then Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee’s Executive Committee; Denise O’Donnell, who now serves as Director of the U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance; the New York Civil Liberties Union’s Reproductive Rights Project; Rabbi Dennis S. Ross, Director of Family Planning Advocates of New York State’s Clergy for Choice; and Assemblymember Pat Fahy.
