In response to the abhorrent Roe v. Wade reversal, Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood has received numerous inquiries from supporters in our area who want to help. One recurring offer is to let folks seeking abortion care stay overnight in their homes. We are overwhelmed and grateful to have such committed and compassionate advocates who want to support our patients in that way, however, Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood is unable to coordinate any such efforts. As an organization, we cannot assume the risk of connecting our patients with people from outside of the organization. There are simply too many factors would be out of our control in these cases. The safety of our patients is our number one priority, always.

We would like to offer some alternative options for folks who are still interested in offering support to out-of-state patients that may be coming to New York State seeking abortion care.

Five different roles you can fill as a volunteer with Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood in a Post-Roe world

*If you are interested in joining our team as a volunteer in any of the following ways, please fill out the volunteer application linked above. Once you fill out this application, you will be added to an email list where you will get updates regarding upcoming volunteer training sessions, and various ways to get involved.*

Abortion Access Navigator Welcome Team: UHPP is in the process of hiring an Abortion Access Navigator (AAN) to assist patients who are traveling to the Capital Region from across the state or from across the country to get the care they need. AANs help patients by booking abortion appointments, making travel arrangements, and working with patients to help pay for their care. AAN Assistants will work closely with our AAN on an on-call basis to help cover the cost of individuals' abortion care and travel plans. You can donate gas cards, hotel vouchers, etc. to help individual people access abortion at one of our three health centers.

Abortion Care Kit Assemblers: In these turbulent times when the national landscape of abortion access is uncertain and concerning for those trying to access care, we want our patients from in state and out of state to know that we are here for them. Donate items for abortion care kits, or help to assemble care kits that will be distributed to abortion patients at our health centers, complete with comfort items and snacks.

Childcare for Abortion Patients: Yet another barrier to abortion care that pregnant people face is finding adequate childcare for the time they would need to be away from home to get their procedure. You can be on-call when our Abortion Access Navigator identifies that a pregnant person will be bringing a child or children with them to their appointment at the health center. We will provide space and toys for children while you watch them.

Community Outreach Tabling Volunteers: In addition to the SCOTUS decision, we are also beginning our busiest community event summer season in nearly three years since the advent of COVID-19! Join a staff member at a community event as a tabling volunteer. Help our staff set up the table, and answer questions from community members about our services. Now more than ever, it is incredibly important that people know that our doors are open, and that Planned Parenthood will continue to be there for them.

Teen Clinic Volunteers: Each week at each of our health centers, our Education Team hosts Teen Clinic. Teen Clinic is a non-judgmental space where young people can come to learn more about their sexual health, make appointments to be seen by a healthcare provider at one of our health centers, and hang out and eat some snacks! Join our educators as we relaunch this program for the first time since the advent of COVID-19!
