What is a vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a safe, simple, and minimally invasive procedure that acts as permanent birth control, and it’s extremely effective at preventing pregnancy – almost 100%. During the procedure, the small tubes in your scrotum that carry sperm are cut or blocked off, preventing sperm from leaving your body and causing pregnancy. (Pregnancy can’t happen when there is no sperm to meet an egg.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Why get a vasectomy?

There are many reasons to get a vasectomy. Maybe your family is just the right size and you and your partner want it to stay that way, or maybe you don’t plan on ever having biological children. Birth control is a two-way street, and there are also people who opt for a vasectomy if their partner doesn’t want to use contraception.

Will a vasectomy affect my sex life?

Not in any way! A vasectomy will not affect testosterone or other hormones, change your ability to get an erection (get hard) or have orgasms, negatively impact your sex drive or desire, or change the amount, appearance, feel, or taste of your semen (cum).

Does a vasectomy work right away?

No. After your vasectomy, it will take approximately three months for your ejaculate to be sperm-free. During that time, another form of birth control is still necessary to prevent pregnancy. Then, 8-16 weeks after your vasectomy, your doctor will do a simple follow-up test called a semen analysis to ensure there are no sperm in your semen.

Is it reversible?

Vasectomies are meant to be permanent, so they can’t always be undone. It’s sometimes possible to reverse a vasectomy, but reversal can be complicated and very expensive, and there are no guarantees that your fertility will come back.

Can a vasectomy prevent STDs?

No. While a vasectomy is extremely effective at preventing pregnancy, it does not provide any protection against sexually transmitted infections.

How much does a vasectomy cost?

A vasectomy at PPTNM is $899. We’re proud to offer accessible and affordable vasectomy services that can cost up to $1,000 or more at other providers in our region.

Is insurance accepted?

Yes. We accept many health insurance plans: Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield (P, V, S, E), Bright Health, Cigna, United Healthcare, United Healthcare Community Plan, Humana, BlueCare, TennCare Select, TRICARE, and Amerigroup.
