You may see reports in the media that we are not providing abortion services at our Nashville Health Center at this time. We are 100% committed to meeting our patients’ family planning needs in Nashville, including abortion services. Just like other health care providers, PPTNM periodically experiences changes in staff, and we are currently taking the next several weeks to fully orient and train new team members. We expect to resume abortion services at this location next month. Our patients are our number one priority, so it is vital we provide them with high quality and safe care. We are offering abortion services at three other locations in Memphis and Knoxville during this time, and we are continuing to provide preventive care, including birth control, cancer screenings, and STI testing and treatment in Nashville.
We believe that the ability to control fertility is fundamental to human health and well-being. We believe that your body is your own, and when it isn't, you can't be free, and you won't be equal.
You may have also heard good news today that the US Supreme Court left in place two lower court opinions that said states violate federal law when they terminate contracts with Planned Parenthood affiliates that offer preventive care to Medicaid recipients. The issue in these cases is whether patients can come to court to vindicate their right to see the provider of their choice. For now, the lower court decisions that they CAN see the provider of their choice stand.
Many of you are asking how this affects our situation in Tennessee. The Tennessee General Assembly passed a law signed by Governor Haslam that required our Medicaid program (TennCare) to submit a waiver to the federal government ending TennCare patients’ freedom of choice of provider. The waiver was submitted to the federal government this summer and is still pending approval. Once TennCare patients have no freedom to choose their provider, then Tennessee can remove Planned Parenthood from the TennCare program. The Supreme Court’s decision today will not impact our situation, but is still wonderful for women in Louisiana and Kansas. We are happy for every victory.
The services we offer are critical, but fragile. We need your support now more than ever. Thank you for all that you do to keep Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi going.
