MEMPHIS, TN-Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region is now offering Next Choice emergency contraception, the generic form of Plan B®, also known as “the morning after pill.”

This generic version is chemically identical to and just as effective as Plan B®, but is available at a substantial savings—up to $20 less than the name-brand version.

Like Plan B®, Next Choice greatly reduces the risk of pregnancy when taken within five days of unprotected intercourse. Next Choice consists of two pills that contain 0.75 mg of levonorgestrel, a hormone commonly used in regular hormonal birth control pills. The first pill is taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, and the second is taken 12 hours later. When taken within five days (120 hours) of unprotected sex, the pills are 59% to 94% effective for preventing pregnancy. The pills have no effect on an established pregnancy and do not cause abortion or birth defects.

Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region (PPGMR) offers Next Choice for $30 to women and men age 17 and older. It is available by prescription to teens younger than 17 for $45 (includes medical consultation and prescription). Emergency contraception is always available and in-stock at PPGMR’s health center at 1407 Union Avenue, Suite 300, and no appointment is necessary.
