MEMPHIS, TN — On August 21, 2012, Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region is once again offering the highly praised “Positive Encounters” healthy sexuality workshop for professionals who work with teens.

The workshop is specifically designed for counselors, nurses, teachers, social workers, church youth leaders and others who work one-on-one with teenagers. It provides professionals with an overview of adolescent sexual behavior and training to help them promote sexual responsibility and health among their teenaged clients.

What: “Positive Encounters” training for professionals who work with teens
When: August 21st, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration deadline August 14th.
Where: Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region, 2430 Poplar Avenue
Cost: $100 per participant (includes materials, lunch and technical assistance)

The Commercial Appeal wrote a feature article (linked here) about the workshop on July 10, 2012, noting the training “addressed many of the educators' concerns with talking about sex with teenagers, primarily their concern with encouraging sex and legal liability.” Legal liability is a big concern for instructors since Tennessee’s new sex education law went into effect on July 1st. That law forbids the promotion of “gateway sexual activity” and allows parents to sue instructors who violate that ban.

Here is what some recent attendees have to say about “Positive Encounters”:

This training gave me what I needed to be able to comfortably talk with a teen about sex and relationship health.
-Vallarie Webber
 Parent Aid/First STEPS

Instructors were outstanding!
-Erma Simpson, M.A.
 Program Director, First STEPS

This training helped me understand how teens think and react according to their developmental stage, which is really important when approaching teens regarding a topic like sex.

 Legal Advocate
