MEMPHIS, TN — Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region (PPGMR)  is taking a group of supporters to the Tennessee Statehouse in Nashville on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 to meet with West Tennessee legislators.

The group of 29 concerned citizens have scheduled and impromptu meetings with state legislators to educate them about the reproductive health needs of the people of West Tennessee. Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region is a leading reproductive health care provider in West Tennessee and is the only source of family planning services for more than 80% of the clients we serve.

The need for PPGMR’s services is greater than ever. According to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Memphis metropolitan area has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the United States. The Memphis area has also seen dramatic increases in reported cases of the most common sexually transmitted infections.

PPGMR’s supporters plan to ask lawmakers to:
  • Continue support of Title X federal funding of family planning services. It’s estimated that for every dollar of Title X funding spent on family planning saves $6.37 that would otherwise be spent on TennCare costs for maternity care.
  • Oppose efforts to amend Tennessee’s constitution to restrict women’s reproductive rights.
  • Support age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education for Tennessee school children so that they have the knowledge they need to protect themselves from sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies.
To schedule an interview in advance of this important reproductive health advocacy event, please contact Joan Carr, Director of Community Affairs at (901) 496-8938.
