Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region Offers Free HIV Testing During the Cooper Young Festival
For Immediate Release: Jan. 30, 2014
MEMPHIS, TN - Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region (PPGMR) will offer free and confidential HIV testing and counseling during the Cooper Young Festival in Midtown Memphis on Saturday, September 18, 2010.
What: Free HIV Testing
When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Memphis Gay & Lesbian Community Center, 892 So. Cooper
Who: Anyone who wants to know their HIV status!
The test is done with a simple mouth swab (no needles!), and results are available on the spot in about 30 minutes.
Everyone who is or has been sexually active is encouraged to be tested. More than 5,700 people in Memphis and Shelby County are currently living with HIV/AIDS. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that as many as one in every 5 people who are infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, do not know they have the virus.
The free community testing event is a part of PPGMR’s HIV outreach program that tests more than a thousand people a year in the Memphis area. Testing is always free at our new health center at 2430 Poplar Avenue. PPGMR also provides free HIV testing every Wednesday night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Memphis Gay & Lesbian Community Center at 892 So. Cooper.
For more information about the free HIV testing event at the Cooper Young Festival, call Joan Carr, Director of Community Affairs at (901) 725-3008.
