MEMPHIS, TN — Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region is proud to participate in a nationwide campaign with MTV and the Kaiser Family Foundation to officially unveil “GYT: Get Yourself Tested,” a campaign to increase testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

You may see the initials GYT all over the web and the TV this month. GYT plays off mobile and web slang and is an easy way for young people to talk about sexual health and getting tested for STDs. GYT kicks off a national promotional campaign throughout April in recognition of National STD Awareness Month. It will include a mix of on-air and online promotions on MTV, encouraging young people to get tested.

The GYT campaign is particularly relevant to people living in the Mid-South. The Memphis metropolitan area has some of the highest rates of STDs in the United States, according to a study released in January by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That study showed incidence of all sexually transmitted diseases have increase in the Memphis area since 2003.

“Most people would be shocked to hear that, by age 25, one in two sexually active young people will have had an STD. This is not just a statistic, but the reality that we see everyday in our health center,” said Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region CEO Barry Chase. “The GYT campaign is an excellent opportunity for people to learn that affordable testing, treatment and education are available and can help young people stay healthy and safe.”

Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region (PPGMR) will be offering half-price STD testing at its health center at 1407 Union Avenue, Suite 300, on Monday, April 13th, Tuesday, April 14th and Thursday, April 16th. Rapid HIV testing is always available and free at PPGMR! No appointment is needed for STD testing at PPGMR.
