The film “I Had An Abortion” features the stories of 10 American women, including one from Memphis, who candidly tell about their abortion experiences. Their stories trace the history of abortion in the U.S., from the time before Roe v. Wade when abortion was illegal, to the present day. The women tell of the circumstances that led them to make the difficult choice to terminate a pregnancy; their struggles to receive accurate information about the procedure; and their experiences and emotions before and after having an abortion.
One of the women featured in the film lived in Memphis when she became pregnant during her senior year of high school. Her story, and the reason she felt she had to make the difficult decision to terminate her pregnancy, may surprise and outrage some viewers.
Each year 1.3 million American women have abortions, yet the topic is so stigmatized that few ever discuss their experiences. The film “I Had An Abortion” tackles the taboo subject in a way that is powerful and thought-provoking. For more information about the film, click here.
The panel discussion to follow will address birth control and abortion rights, feminism, and a proposed change in the Tennessee constitution that could endanger a woman’s right to basic reproductive health services. Planned Parenthood hopes to inspire a new generation of activists who will stand up to defend rights that benefit all women that were won by activists decades ago.
