Planned Parenthood Celebrates National Condom Week
For Immediate Release: Jan. 30, 2014
This week, February 13-19, 2012, Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region is celebrating National Condom Week with a public information campaign that highlights locations where condoms are available free to the general public.
National Condom Week is observed around the country, and especially on college campuses. The purpose of the observance is to raise awareness of the health benefits of consistent and correct use of latex condoms by sexually active people.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when used as directed, condoms can significantly reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections. Laboratory studies have shown that latex condoms provide an effective barrier against even the smallest STD pathogens, including HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. They are also up to 98 percent effective in preventing pregnancy, if used correctly.
Condoms can be purchased at most drug and convenience stores. You do not have to be of a certain age or show ID to buy condoms. Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region provides free condoms at the following locations:
- Planned Parenthood’s Health Center
2430 Poplar Avenue
Memphis, TN 38112 - Caritas Village Coffee Shop
2509 Harvard Avenue
Memphis, TN 38112 - Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center
892 S. Cooper Street
Memphis, TN 38104
Planned Parenthood also partners with student groups on several Mid-South college campuses to provide free condoms and sexual health information for students.
During National Condom Week, Planned Parenthood will highlight some of those student-led educational activities on its Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/PPGMR) and its Twitter feed (www.twitter.com/PPGMR). Providing free condoms and health information is one of the many ways Planned Parenthood promotes health and safety in our community.
