College Mentoring Event for Memphis Teenagers

According to the CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey, more than 2 out of every 3 Memphis City high school students has had sexual experience by their senior year. The survey shows a quarter of all high school students have had four or more sexual partners and 23% report they were never taught in school about AIDS or HIV.

Sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates in Shelby County, including Memphis, are four times the national average. The rates are highest among 15 to 24 year olds. According to the Tennessee Department of Health, nearly half of all the state’s teenage STI cases are in Shelby County. Shelby County also has the highest teen pregnancy rate among the 95 counties in the state.
 
In an effort to make an impact on these negative outcomes and help middle and high school students excel and attend college, LeMoyne-Owne and Howard students who attended a Planned Parenthood healthy sexuality training are teaming up to host “The College Experience,” a mentoring event for Memphis-area teenagers.
 
What: The College Experience
When: Thursday, March 14th, 11am-2pm
Where: LeMoyne-Owen College: Gibson Orgill Building (also known as Gibson Orgill Hall or GOH)
Who Can Participate: Teen girls and boys between the ages of 13 and 17
