Sterilization is a procedure that closes or blocks your fallopian tubes so you can't get pregnant. Your tubes are where the egg and sperm meet. If they can't meet, then the egg can't be fertilized.

At Planned Parenthood, we offer two types of sterilization services: Essure and vasectomy.

For people with fallopian tubes, we are happy to offer Essure, a permanent birth control procedure that works with your body to create a natural barrier to prevent pregnancy. The Essure procedure offers benefits no other permanent birth control can.

How Essure Works

The Essure procedure can be completed with no down time, surgery or anesthesia. There is no slowing down to recover, so you won't need to take any time away from your busy life.

During the procedure, your health care provider will slide a small, soft insert into your fallopian tubes through the natural pathways of your vagina and cervix. The very tip of each insert remains visible to your provider, providing confirmation of proper placement. The flexible Essure inserts are made from the same trusted silicone-free material used in heart surgery, so they bend and conform to the shape of your fallopian tubes while remaining securely in place.

What to Expect

Over the next three months after your procedure, your body will create a natural barrier within each of your fallopian tubes, making sure sperm will never reach your eggs. This means that after three months and an Essure Confirmation Test, you won't get pregnant.

Like all permanent birth control procedures, the Essure procedure is not reversible. You should make sure you do not want to get pregnant in the future. If you think you'd like to get pregnant in the future, there are many other methods of birth control available.
