Tina Austin has been a regular volunteer at Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri for the past few years. She is always ready to jump in and help in any way. Tina has helped us with data entry, community outreach, and is willing to lead and ensure we have a successful event. Volunteer Coordinator and Lead Navigator Christen Moore asked Tina a few questions about volunteering.

Why is it important to you to volunteer for Planned Parenthood in Missouri?

I feel it is important to volunteer at PP to try to maintain the hard fought rights that women have won before our generation. We inherited these rights and it is incumbent upon us to try to maintain them for the younger generation; our daughters and granddaughters. These rights are under attack. If we do nothing, we will lose them. Women my age enjoyed a certain degree of privilege the generation before us fought for. The least we can do it hold it in trust for the next generation.

Do you have a favorite volunteer experience with Planned Parenthood?

One of the first things I did for PP was data entry. I didn’t know most of the people at the event, but over the course of the evening we learned together and became friends. It’s a very rewarding experience and Stacey and Christen are so welcoming and helpful, you will feel like you belong before your know it.

What else would you like to share with readers about volunteering?

Just do it. If you have the skills and the time, this is a good place to share them. The women that need PP the most are probably not as lucky as you. It's a better use of your time than many, many things. Giving back to your community makes you a better person.

And finally, just for fun, what is your favorite food?

My family calls me a fruit bat because I would live on fruit if I could afford it. I am also fond of ice cream and any kind of potatoes.
