Washington, D.C.— Staff and volunteers from Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida (PPSWCF) were in Washington, D.C. this week for the organization’s National Conference. During this convening, the local nonprofit was honored with two national awards: An Affiliate Excellence Award in Media and Public Relations and the Reverends Betsy and Tom Davis Award, being awarded to Central Florida’s Reverend Bryan Fulwider.

“An Affiliate Excellence Award is a special recognition within the Planned Parenthood family,” said Anna V. Eskamani, PPSWCF’s Senior Director of Public Affairs and Field Operations. “It means we are national leaders in telling our story and inspiring others to do the same. It is a powerful reflection of our efforts to build a powerful and meaningful narrative, one that translates for everyday Floridians and Americans. This recognition is due in large part to the collaboration between our statewide partners and volunteer advocates.”

The Reverends Betsy and Tom Davis devoted their lives to supporting reproductive choice and women’s health. The award named for them is given annually to honor a member of the clergy, or a lay religious leader, who occupies a volunteer leadership position in a Planned Parenthood affiliate and who has made significant contributions to the affiliate and to advancing the Planned Parenthood mission.

An ordained minister who has served as a local Central Florida church Pastor for over 30 years in both the United Methodist Church and the United Church of Christ, the Rev. Bryan Fulwider serves as chairperson of the Interfaith Council of Central Florida, is a board member of a number of nonprofits, and is a co-host and founder of NPR’s “Friends Talking Faith with The Three Wise Guys.” He has been a lifelong advocate for Planned Parenthood, and most recently, he has worked with PPSWCF on building coalitions within the faith community, helping to establish PPSWCF’s “Interfaith Coalition Sign On Letter.”

“The Reverend Bryan Fulwider has been a dynamic clergy voice and advocate for reproductive health, rights, and justice for decades,” said Barbara Zdravecky, PPSWCF CEO. “Thanks to his leadership and that of others, over 50 faith leaders have signed onto our Interfaith Coalition Sign On Letter within a two-month period, surpassing our goals.”

The Rev. Bryan Fulwider along with Zdravecky, Eskamani, additional senior staff, and board members attended today’s award reception and accepted the awards on behalf of PPSWCF.
