Planned Parenthood Receives $100,000 Grant for Health Care Service Expansion
For Immediate Release: June 4, 2014
Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida has received a $100,000 grant from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation. Among the largest contributions Planned Parenthood has received, the grant from Gulf Coast will enable the organization to help fill primary care needs in Sarasota County.
Currently, Planned Parenthood’s services focus on reproductive and sexual health care – this service expansion will allow them to provide early diagnosis and treatment for patients at elevated risk for developing certain chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, asthma and hyperthyroidism. Access to health insurance and affordable care can save families from bankruptcy, promote healthy living, and reduce future healthcare costs. Without adequate preventive care, many of those without care end up in our emergency rooms, costing the community additional dollars.
Sarasota County has more than 50,000 uninsured and Medicaid-eligible women and a shortage of primary care providers. For many patients Planned Parenthood is their only health care provider. Adding a primary care physician as well as additional training of their staff of licensed clinicians will allow Planned Parenthood to provide comprehensive health care to both those newly insured under the new health care law as well as those who will remain uninsured. With special consideration to the healthcare needs in the southern part of Sarasota County, Gulf Coast’s grant allows Planned Parenthood to continue their commitment to keeping the community healthy and helping patients lead their healthiest lives.
