Should I get tested for STDs?

Yes! Most of the time sexually transmitted infections don’t show symptoms so testing is the only way to know for sure.

You should get tested if:

  • Your partner has an STD
  • You’ve had unprotected sex (no condom, internal condom, or dental dam)
  • There are sores on your genitals
  • There is discharge from your penis or vagina
  • You have itching and/or burning during urination
  • You are ready to have sex with someone new — most STDs don’t have symptoms, so you can’t tell by just looking

What is an STD/STI?

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also known as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are infections that are passed from one person to another during vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

They’re really common and lots of people who have them don’t have any symptoms. STIs can be dangerous, but the good news is that getting tested is no big deal and most are easy to treat.

Which STD tests do I need?

There is no single test for every sexually transmitted infection — tests are specific to each infection. And some infections can even be found using different kinds of tests. You and your health care provider will decide what tests make the most sense for you.

How does STD testing work?

How does STD testing work?

STD testing is quick and easy. It isn’t always part of your regular checkup so make sure to ask for STD testing.

During your visit, be honest with the nurses and doctors so they can help you figure out which tests are best for you.
