Planned Parenthood of Southern New England (PPSNE) has several Easy Access health centers to serve you in Bridgeport, Manchester, New Haven, and New London. In order to make your reproductive and/or sexual health visit as safe and comfortable as possible, each of these health centers is handicapped-accessible and has the Welner examination table and/or Hoyer Lift.
The Welner table was designed by Dr. Sandra Welner, an obstetrician/gynecologist who became disabled and refocused her career on serving the reproductive health needs of women with disabilities.
The table, pictured below, adjusts to any height and has comfortable boots which can be moved to any position instead of stirrups. Our New Haven and Bridgeport health centers also have the Hoyer Lift which is used to move clients from wheelchair to exam table.
Why Come to Planned Parenthood?
At Planned Parenthood, we always say we're more than you think. Unless you've been a patient or supporter of Planned Parenthood, you may not know that we are the largest provider of reproductive health and family planning services in Connecticut and Rhode Island. We operate 19 health centers. All have accessible entrances, and four of our centers (Bridgeport, New Haven, New London, and Manchester) are equipped with the Welner tables.
Our specialty is basic reproductive healthcare for all women. We provide easy access for women who may need special accommodations in order to undergo a pelvic examination.
Planned Parenthood of Southern New England is also well-known as a provider of education and training on issues of sexuality and sexual health. And, we are a respected statewide and national advocate for the reproductive health and rights of women.
Our medical staff is trained and ready to help make it easier for you to get an annual gynecological exam.
What Training Does Planned Parenthood Staff Receive?
At Planned Parenthood, routine healthcare is provided by a nurse practitioner, physician assistant or certified nurse midwife. Most of our clinicians are women, who are specially trained in gynecology/reproductive health. They have received additional training in delivery of care to women with disabilities, and in the use of the hydraulic exam table.
How Do I Make an Appointment?
Making an appointment is easy! You can make your appointment online or just call the nearest Planned Parenthood heath center or our Call Center (numbers are listed below). When making your appointment, please mention the type of accommodations you may require. It will help us to know, for example, whether you will be using a wheelchair and whether you will be bringing a personal care assistant with you. This is a good time to ask about anything else that may be of concern to you.
