In an editorial published today, the Hartford Courant strongly opposes rule changes proposed by the Bush Administration that would equate contraception with abortion.

The Bush administration's audacity in imposing its moral and religious ideology on the nation through back channels is nothing new.

Tactics include controversial appointments made when Congress is out of session and rules changes in federal agencies that affect states, yet bypass Congress.

The latest changes proposed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services understandably alarm family planning advocates. The new rules could make it harder for women to obtain contraception or legal abortions.
...

Congress should stop these changes. They don't prevent discrimination, they foster it by throwing obstacles in the way of women in pursuit of legal medical treatment.
