Letter to the Editor

Letters to the editor are widely read by the public and politicians. Here are a few rules of thumb which will increase the probability of seeing your letter in print:
  • Keep your letter brief and to the point. Newspapers have limited space and always receive more letters than they can print. A concise and clear letter has a better chance of being published.
  • Address only one issue per letter. If you're writing about Medicaid funding for abortion, don't bring up emergency contraception too. Write a second letter, and a third.
  • Feelings are valid when writing a Letter to the Editor. Don't spare your personal perspective or your opinions. Be factual, but go beyond statistics to help people understand why you feel the way you do.
  • Avoid making slanderous statements or engaging in character assassination. Such a letter might be fun to write, but it will not be published!
  • Always include your full name, address, and phone number with your letter. Newspapers always verify the letters they publish. (Your address will not be published if you do not include your contact information.)
  • Consider expanding your letter into a "guest viewpoint". If your topic is complicated, or you wish to introduce a lot of evidence to support your opinion, this may be the way to go. Newspapers look to readers from all walks of life for these Op-Ed pieces.
