(West Palm Beach) On Friday, March 27th Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) presented the Ruth Green Award to Lillian A. Tamayo, President & CEO of  Planned Parenthood of South Florida and the Treasure Coast (PPSFTC). The award is the highest honor bestowed upon CEOs and was presented at the Planned Parenthood 2009 Gala, the highlight of PPFA’s national conference, which is attended by more than 1,000 leaders and members of the organization, who work on the front lines of women’s health care every day.

“Lillian Tamayo epitomizes true leadership and her contributions to Planned Parenthood both in Florida and nationwide are exceptional,” said PPFA President Cecile Richards. “Lillian’s transformative impact is reflected not only in her passionate advocacy for women’s health care and commitment to delivering vital services and education, but also in her innovative efforts to empower others to do the same.”

The Ruth Green Award was established in 1981 to honor a remarkable and talented woman who served Planned Parenthood as a volunteer, an executive director and as an ambassador-at-large for the mission of Planned Parenthood.

“Planned Parenthood is a trusted health care provider, an experienced educator, and a powerful advocate for reproductive freedom,” said Lillian A. Tamayo. “I am proud to represent Planned Parenthood because this is an organization on the front lines of health care delivery. We are dedicated to improving the health and lives of our community by increasing access to critical reproductive health care and education.”

Lillian Tamayo has more than twenty-five years of experience in executive management. As President/CEO of PPSFTC, Ms. Tamayo has contributed to the expansive growth of the organization into eight of Florida’s most diverse counties. Under her leadership, Planned Parenthood broadened its clinical and educational service over the past ten years to reach the diverse and fast-growing demographics of its community. Numerous awards have been earned by the affiliate—including the “Outstanding Community Health Organization Award” from the Latino Caucus of the American Public Health Association, and the “Affiliate Excellence Award for Achievements in Diversity” from Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Ms. Tamayo serves on the Board of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and was nominated by Democratic National Committee Chairman, Howard Dean, to serve as a Party Leader and Elected Official member of the Platform Committee for the 2008 Democratic National Convention. In 2006 Ms. Tamayo received the ACLU Foundation of Florida’s Nelson Poynter Award which is presented to an individual who has made a major contribution to the cause of civil liberties in Florida. A native of Cuba, Ms.  Tamayo lived in New Jersey and Connecticut prior to relocating to South Florida in 1999
