If you are already receiving hormone therapy, you can schedule an appointment for ongoing care and monitoring.
Criteria for Starting Hormone Therapy
If you are medically eligible, Planned Parenthood providers may be able to start hormone therapy as early as the first visit. Hormone readiness is determined through informed consent. Informed consent means you can demonstrate understanding of both the risks and the benefits of hormone therapy and you and your provider have both decided that this is the appropriate time for you to begin this process. Patients are not required to provide an approval letter from a therapist/social worker to start hormone therapy. PPPSGV believes that when fully informed, patients are capable of determining what is best for themselves and their health. We do encourage patients to connect with a mental health provider as needed for comprehensive mental health care. Referrals for transgender-friendly mental health providers are available at PPPSGV.
Our criteria for hormone therapy reflects the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) guidelines. Criteria to start hormone therapy may include the following:
Ability to give informed consent
Age 18 years old or older
Persistent gender dysphoria
Assessment that any other medical or mental health conditions are reasonably well controlled and managed appropriately outside of PPPSGV.
Your provider will discuss these criteria in detail during your initial visit and determine whether they are fulfilled.
Online appointment scheduling for transgender care
Online scheduling is available for transgender care appointments. Planned Parenthood is dedicated to making healthcare accessible and welcoming to everyone who needs that care, no matter what. When you make an appointment by phone, or in person, and when you arrive for your appointment, your forms and health records at Planned Parenthood will provide diverse gender options. However, our online scheduling system currently offers limited options for gender and gender identity. Planned Parenthood is working with our online scheduling system vendor to expand options as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, online booking remains an important resource for our patients as we work towards a more inclusive solution. Thank you for your patience.
What To Expect On Your First Visit
In order to provide patients with personalized care, all Planned Parenthood patients are asked to provide their chosen name and pronouns, in addition to legal names, at check in. At your initial visit, your provider will discuss with you the informed consent process, your gender identity history, and will review both the expected effects and possible risk factors for hormone therapy. A comprehensive history will be obtained and reviewed. The provider will perform routine lab work to make sure you are a healthy candidate for hormone therapy.
Based on the results of this visit, most patients are prescribed hormones that day. Together, you and your provider will make the best decision for you.
In order to continue receiving your hormones, you will need to schedule periodic appointments at Planned Parenthood for routine lab work and monitoring. Your provider will determine the best follow up schedule based upon your needs. Reaching your individualized transition goals will be a gradual process, and your provider will discuss in-depth what that may look like.
PPPSGV is proud to be your sexual healthcare provider in every way. In addition to hormone therapy services, well-person checks, STD testing and treatment, HIV testing and prevention, abortion care, and other healthcare services are also available for transgender patients.
Costs for hormone therapy vary depending on your individual needs and insurance coverage. Generally the initial consultation visit includes the examination, initial labs and medication.
Planned Parenthood accepts full scope California MediCal, Blue Shield PPO, out of network PPOs and other insurance plans that allow out of network benefits. We are currently not contracted with Managed MediCal plans for hormone therapy. We may be able to provide services to patients with Managed MediCal with prior authorization from your insurance company.
We also accept payment by cash, credit card and flexible spending account cards. Payment is due at the time of service.
Planned Parenthood staff will contact your insurance provider to confirm hormonal therapy services are covered and what, if any, your out of pocket expense will be. We encourage all patients to contact their insurance provider prior to an appointment to ensure coverage and to get a full understanding of what options the insurance carrier allows for hormonal therapy. We will complete prior authorization forms for prescriptions if required by your insurance.
All patients will receive a resource list of social and community resources in the region including medical, surgical, legal, and mental health provider resources.
