Talking to your kids and teens about sex and relationships can be a awkward sometimes – but it doesn’t have to be. Planned Parenthood is here to provide the tools and resources you need to have open and honest communication with your children about staying safe, healthy and strong.
At Planned Parenthood, we believe parents, guardians, and other caregivers should be the primary sexuality educators for their children. Talking to children of all ages about sex, sexuality, and relationships is important to ensure that young people have the information they need to keep themselves safe and healthy. Additionally, we want young people to grow up with positive attitudes about sexuality in order to develop into sexually healthy adults.
Talking About Sexuality
Doesn’t talking about sex encourage teens to go out and have sex? Research tells us that the opposite is true. When young people can talk to their parents or other trusted adults openly and honestly about sex, sexuality, and relationships, they are more likely to:
- Receive accurate information, rather than relying on potential misinformation from peers or media
- Understand their own bodies, how they work, and when there might be a health concern
- Identify sexual abuse, sexual assault, or dating violence, and who to go to for help
- Communicate effectively with dating partners about boundaries and behavior expectations
- Delay sexual behaviors
- Engage in safer sexual behaviors, if and when they do decide to have sex
Parent and Caregiver Programs
Need help having these conversations? Our Let’s Talk workshops and programs are designed to equip parents and caregivers with the knowledge and tools to have honest, medically accurate and age-appropriate conversations with youth of any age. We provide parent and caregiver education in a variety of settings, including community organizations, community centers and schools. All workshops and programs are offered in English or Spanish.
Let’s Talk 101 – is an hour and half workshop that will give parents and caregivers the basic tools and information to start having these complex and oftentimes awkward conversations with their youth.
Let’s Talk Intro – Need a little more information and tools? This 3-workshop program aims to help you figure out what sexuality topics are age-appropriate, recognize “teachable moments” that may initiate or facilitate conversations, and identify additional resources. Each workshop is designed to equip parents and caregivers with knowledge and skills to have conversations about sexuality, growing up and relationships, with kids of any age.
Let’s Talk Plus – this in-depth 8-workshop program will dive deeper into sexuality topics to give parents and caregivers additional tools and information needed as youth get older and questions become more complex. Our program covers topics such as puberty development, anatomy, sexually transmitted infections, birth control methods, consent and relationships, and much more.
