You might be wondering if you or your partner needs to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
If you or your partner have symptoms of an STD, it’s important to be tested right away. Some common symptoms of STDs include sores on the genitals, discharge from the penis or vagina and/or itching and burning during urination.
Many infections often don’t cause any symptoms and many people get or spread infections without ever having symptoms. If you had sex with another person and didn’t use protection (like a condom, female condom, or dental dam), it’s a good idea to get tested.
Which STD tests do I need?
There is no single test for every sexually transmitted disease — tests are specific to each infection. And some infections can be found using different kinds of tests. You and your health care provider will decide what STD tests make the most sense for you.
If you or your partner test positive for an STD, we can also help with the treatment. Most STDs can be cured with medicine and there are a lot of treatments for the STDs that can’t be cured with medicine. So the sooner you know if you have an STD, the sooner you can get the care you need to stay healthy.
