Know your abortion options

Abortion Procedure (In-Clinic)

Abortion procedures (sometimes called surgical abortions) are safe, simple medical procedures provided by doctors and nurses at our health centers. We offer abortion procedures for 1st and 2nd trimester pregnancies.

This procedure is quick, effective, and does not require a follow-up visit.

The Abortion Pill (In-Clinic)

The abortion pill is a safe & effective series of pills that are used to end a pregnancy. The abortion pill is available up to 77 days from the first day of your last menstrual period and available at every PPPSGV health center (Monday-Saturday).

Abortion Pill (via Telehealth)

We're proud to now offer the abortion pill via telehealth!

You can now connect with one of our licensed providers from the comfort of your home, and then choose to pick up the medications at a convenient location near you or have them delivered right to your doorstep.

We use the same medications and guidelines we would if you were being seen in-clinic. Our team will be there to guide you each step of the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a California resident to have an abortion?

No. California does not have any residency requirements to have an abortion.

How soon after an abortion can I have sex?

It is typically advised that you wait about two weeks before having sex or inserting anything vaginally to reduce the risk of infection.

Will an abortion affect my ability to get pregnant or have children later?

Having an abortion doesn’t affect your ability to get pregnant in the future. You can become fertile again very soon after an abortion.

How will having an abortion impact my period?

It’s normal to have some on and off bleeding after an abortion that is different from your period. Your period should go back to normal 4-8 weeks after your abortion.

How soon can I have an abortion?
  • There is no waiting period to get an abortion in California.

  • We can schedule an abortion appointment as soon as someone has a positive pregnancy test. Medication abortion appointments are often available within one or two days and in-clinic abortions are usually scheduled within a week. We can occasionally accommodate walk-in appointments for our medication abortion services.

How old do you need to be to get an abortion? Can I get an abortion without my parent or legal guardian’s permission?

Under California law, minors can obtain an abortion without notifying or obtaining the consent of their parents or legal guardians.

Will there be protestors at my visit?

Occasionally, we have protesters outside of our health centers. They may try to stop your car, hand you packets with false information, or carry signs that are intended to make you uncomfortable.

A few important things to remember if you see protesters outside of our clinic:

  • You do not have to talk to them or take anything from them.
  • Protesters are not allowed on our property.
  • Protesters may not block your access to our health center.
  • Protesters may not film or take photos within 100 feet of a health center with the intent to intimidate.

All our health centers have security measures in place for the safety and security of our patients and staff.

Can I go on birth control after an abortion?

If you are considering going on birth control to reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy after your abortion, most methods including long-acting reversible contraception (implants and IUDs) can be started right after your abortion or within the next few days.

When can I resume my normal activities after an abortion?
  • You can go back to work, school, exercise, and most other normal activities the next day if you feel up to it.

  • If you had an in-clinic abortion and received sedation, please do not drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours after the procedure.

How will I feel after an abortion?

Each person and situation is different. The decision to have an abortion can be an easy or difficult one. For some people, it is a very stressful time, for others it’s not. Let yourself feel the emotions you need to. If your mood keeps you from doing the things you usually do each day, call your doctor or nurse for help. You can also call Exhale or All-Options for free, confidential, and non-judgmental emotional support after an abortion.
