VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood

What does VOX stand for?
VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood is a student organization with chapters on campuses nationwide. "Vox" is the Latin word for "voice," and VOX groups are the voices for choice and sexual health on their campuses. There are currentlylocal VOX chapters at SDSU and UCSD. Okay, so what does VOX do?
VOX members organize events to educate and mobilize the student body on issues affecting sexual health and reproductive rights, connect students to local Planned Parenthood health centers, and serve as a pro-choice presence on campus.

Examples of recent events and activities:

  • Sextravaganza and Sex on the Lawn annual festivals at UCSD and SDSU hosted by VOX, with games and information about reproductive health and pro-choice politics!
  • Activities and events during National Condom Week, Back Up Your Birth Control Day (emergency contraception awareness event), and STI/STD Awareness Month
  • Coalition activitieswith other progressive and feminist student organizations duringSexual Assault Awareness Week, Love Your Body Day, International Women's Day, and World AIDS Day
  • Campaign activities (like letter-signing and phone-call drives to elected officials, or helping to defeat the dangerous Parental Notification Initiatives each of the three times it has been on the ballot in the last four years)
  • Tabling events to distribute condoms and health information, to raise awareness about current issues, and to connect with new members
  • Issues and skills training opportunities with Planned Parenthood staff
  • Opportunity to attend an annual Capitol Day event in Sacramento!

Abortion is legalso what's the big deal about choice?
Many of today's students never knew a time when contraception wasn't readily available and abortion wasn't safe and legal. And many students don't realize that anti-abortion and anti-family planning groups are working harder than ever to try to erode our rights and restrict our access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare. VOX groups educate students about current issues and campaigns at the local, state, and federal level that they can take action on to protect reproductive rights and expand access to important services and programs!

Plus, Choice is about much more than just the right to abortion. For example, being pro-choice also means supporting responsible sexuality education and access to contraception so women and men have the information and tools to be safe and responsible that will help themmake the best decisionsabout their future.

I'm interested, but I don't know very much about reproductive rights/politics/sexual health!
You don't have to be an expert on the issues to join VOXyou just have to be willing to get involved! If you're a college student who cares about sexual health and reproductive rights, and/or you want to learn more about these issues and build your skills as an activist, VOX is the group for you! Contact your campus chapter or come to a meeting to learn more!
