The U.S. Senate narrowly defeated a bill that would block millions of women with low incomes from coming to Planned Parenthood for breast exams, cancer screenings and birth control – 850,000 in California alone. This is a victory for women across our country. But the fight is far from over. Some members of Congress will undoubtedly mount more attacks on Planned Parenthood and women’s health. That is why we are gathering at Balboa Park – to show Congress that the vast majority of American voters support Planned Parenthood and the critical health care services it provides to millions of people every year.

This rally is being held in coordination with Our Lives on the Line, a massive nationwide day of action to lift the voices of the millions of Americans who will continue to fight to ensure health care is accessible to all.

"Women stopped this bill to repeal Obamacare in its tracks. Since day one, women have led the opposition. Americans across the country rose up in opposition, and never let up. Against all odds, grassroots organizing defeated Trumpcare. We know this is the beginning, not the end, of fighting for what we believe in — but it’s a big step forward," said Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest President and CEO Darrah DiGiorgio Johnson.

Background: Planned Parenthood Funding

When politicians say they want to defund Planned Parenthood, what they’re really saying is they want to block millions across the country and 100,000 in San Diego County from access to basic health care – cancer screenings, birth control, well woman exams – that they depend on.

Planned Parenthood receives state and federal reimbursements for health care services we provide to our patients. About 67 percent of our funding at Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest comes from state and federal reimbursements for the medical care we provide. No federal dollars are spent on abortion. For many people, Planned Parenthood is their only source of health care. Without federal reimbursements for health care services, 100,000 people in San Diego County could be left without birth control, STD testing and treatment, lifesaving cervical cancer testing and treatment, and breast exams.
