Award-Winning Design Unveiled at Newly Expanded Mission Bay Health Center

Planned Parenthood recently doubled the size of its Mission Bay Health Center with an award-winning, patient-centered design thanks to a gift from a longtime supporter and board member. This expansion is part of a master plan to expand reproductive health care services in areas of the greatest need with modern, efficient design.

Fast Company awarded Planned Parenthood the 2016 Innovation by Design Award in the Health category for its health center design concepts that put the patient’s experience in the forefront. Our affiliate has implemented this new design at our Mission Bay Health Center, as well as three other health centers in the past two years.

“When our patients walk through our doors they know they are welcome because they see the beautiful, modern design with comfortable seating and a relaxing atmosphere,” Keim said. “That attention to detail is carried throughout the patient’s experience to make sure they know we are here to serve their needs.”

In the exam rooms, our design ensures our patients get the providers full attention. For example, all of the clinicians’ supplies are in one room so they can spend more time with the patient and less time gathering equipment.

We were able to expand the Mission Bay Health Center thanks to a gift from longtime supporter and Board Member Susanna Flaster. The health center was renamed in honor of Flaster’s mother, Mimi Brien.

“My mother went out of her way to tell young people about Planned Parenthood, because she saw the barriers that were created if they could not plan their families. She felt that Planned Parenthood dignified women and was an engine of equality,” Flaster said.
