January 19, 2019 was the third-annual Women’s March and our organization had a presence at the San Diego, Coachella, and Riverside marches. I had the pleasure of attending the San Diego march — wearing our beloved Uterina costume.

Despite all the chatter in politics, it was immediately evident that there was nothing but the best of vibes to be experienced. It seems that every year the signs get bigger, the voices get louder, and the crowds get more excited.

Immediately after our Planned Parenthood booth was set up, we were greeted by enthusiastic marchers who wanted to learn more and show their support for Planned Parenthood. The encouraging words, cheers, and thumbs-up we all received were heartwarming, and our team shared information, passed out swag, and partook in the group selfies with a matching spirit.

Once a sizeable crowd had gathered at the Waterfront Park, the morning was kicked off with an impressive variety of guest speakers. We had our very own Nora Vargas, VP of Community and Government Relations, as the march’s emcee. Other speakers included Virginia Christman, a Kumeyaay elder; Rabbi Laurie Coskey; Mejgan Afshan, Advocacy & Policy Coordinator; Lucero Camarena, Transgender Advocate & Speaker, and many more. By the end I lost track of how many “YAS KWEEN YAS!” I heard blaring from the mass of people that grew to an unbelievable turnout of marchers. Also, I cannot forget to give a nod to the music! There was a protest cover band that flawlessly covered anthems like Green Day’s "American Idiot." There were singers with honeyed, soulful voices and the San Diego Women’s Chorus — who performed with an intense passion that gave everyone ALL THE FEELS!

After the lineup of speakers and musicians, we took to the streets and we marched! All around you could see people holding their signs like armor, chanting with gusto, and women smiling and linking arms. It was also a truly proud moment to see our pink banner amidst the masses, letting San Diego know we were there to show our support. This event was the perfect opportunity to give a voice to groups that have been targeted by the current administration. An amalgam of advocates came out to shout their causes loud and proud. I saw members of the LGBTQ community, advocates of immigration rights, groups against gun violence, and many more.

Overall, the day could be described as an electric series of inspiring moments. We’re so proud to have been able to march in solidarity with such a strong crowd of women and supporters across the nation. From Riverside to Coachella and San Diego to Imperial, it was incredible to see such a diverse group of people come together for this march!
