People at high risk of being exposed to HIV can reduce their risk with medications called PrEP and PEP.

PrEP

If you are at risk of being exposed to HIV, you can take medication daily to reduce your risk of contracting the virus.

A person takes PrEP before they are exposed. PrEP is incredibly effective when taken correctly and consistently.

PEP

If you do think you have been exposed to HIV, PEP can help reduce your risk of getting HIV if started within 72 hours.

Taking PrEP and PEP empowers you. You can have a healthy, safe sex life! PrEP and PEP protect you from HIV without having to rely on partners.

How do I pay for it?

PrEP and PEP are covered by most insurance plans, including Medi-Cal, Medicare, and private employer plans. If you do not have insurance, ask about medication assistance programs to receive PrEP or PEP at low- to no-cost for you.

Remember, a condom is also a very good way to protect yourself from HIV, and most sexually-transmitted infections.
