The 4thannual Eastern Coachella Valley Pride celebration — like many of our celebrations — has moved online this year. But the community is just as involved as ever.

Eastern Coachella Valley Pride
October 16–17, Friday and Saturday

On Friday, October 16, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., a caravan of decorated cars will drive together in Coachella.

Sahara Huazano, is the Director of Programs at Alianza Coachella Valley.

“This is a youth-led, community-led event,” Sahara said. “It speaks to the community, that they’re not waiting for any leadership to do this on their behalf.”

Sahara and Alianza Coachella Valley, along with Miguel Navarro, Community Engagement Manager for the LGBT Community Center of the Desert; the Youth-led Participatory Action Research Project (YPAR); and additional community partners (including Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest) are organizing the event — with the goals of bringing together resources and providing a culturally sensitive space to have a dialogue with LGBTQ allies and family members.

Local middle-school and high-school-age youth played central roles in designing the event flyer, and organizing the caravan and film screenings — all of which will be seen on the event’s Facebook page.

The decorated-car caravan is a way for those without online access to participate in the Pride celebration.

“Some community members have access to internet but some don’t. A caravan is like a parade, to show we’re here to support the community, despite social distancing,” Sahara said. “Even with Covid, we’re able to connect this year.”
