Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)

Interested in a birth a control that lasts for years, is really effective, and doesn't require you to take a pill every night? Then let us introduce you to LARC (Long-Acting Reversible Contraception).

LARCs include intrauterine devices (IUDs) — such as Paragard, Mirena, and Skyla — and the birth control implant, Nexplanon.

These birth control methods:

  • last between 3-12 years
  • are over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy
  • can be removed at any time

Paragard: A hormone-free, t-shaped IUD made of copper and plastic that is inserted into the uterus. It lasts up to 12 years.

Mirena or Skyla: A plastic, t-shaped IUD inserted into the uterus that releases a small amount of the progestin hormone. It lasts up to 3 to 6 years.

Nexplanon: A matchstick-size, flexible plastic rod that’s inserted under the skin in the upper arm and releases hormones to prevent pregnancy. It lasts up to 4 years.

At Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties, we educate our patients about all the birth control options available to them, including LARCs, so patients can decide on the best method for them.
