[Concord, NH & Portland, ME] — It’s time to prioritize your health! As part of Women’s Health Week (May 13-19), Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE)  is urging women in Maine and New Hampshire to schedule preventive checkups, including breast cancer screenings, pelvic exams, and, if recommended, a Pap test.

“The health of women affects our families, our partners, and our communities,” said PPNNE Medical Director Regan Theiler, MD, PhD, FACOG. “As we honor our mothers this week, we should also take the time to encourage them, and all the women in our lives, to schedule the regular checkups they need to live longer, healthier, and happier lives.”

PPNNE has six health centers in New Hampshire and four health centers in Maine that offer a wide range of preventive health services, including lifesaving cancer screenings, birth control, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, breast health services, the HPV vaccine, and sexual health information and education.

“At Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, we know firsthand the importance of checkups in preventing more serious health issues,” said Theiler.  “Regular exams and health screenings can rule out or detect life-threatening diseases such as breast and cervical cancers and STDs, including HIV.  Early detection and treatment of these diseases saves lives.”

Women should talk with their provider to see what their checkup should include.  A Women’s Wellness checklist that can help start that conversation is available at plannedparenthood.tumblr.com.

National Women’s Health Week is an excellent opportunity for women to prioritize and take charge of their health. Women can call 1-866-476-1321 or visit www.ppnne.org to make an appointment for a wellness exam, or any other reproductive health care visit at Planned Parenthood.
