Planned Parenthood of Northern New England Receives United Way of York County Grant

Biddeford and Sanford (ME) – Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) today announced that it has been awarded a one-year grant totaling $10,000 by the United Way of York County. This investment will assist PPNNE in providing discounted or free health care to low income and uninsured York County patients. Through the mobilization of resources, expertise and funds that support programs focused on education, income and health – the building blocks of a good life, United Way of York County advances the common good and strengthens the whole community.

Last year, PPNNE served 2,798 women, men and teens at the agency's two York County health centers located in Biddeford and Sanford, Maine. Through these health centers, York County patients have access to an array of comprehensive reproductive health services, including: annual gynecological exams with screenings for five types of cancer, birth control education and supplies, including emergency contraception, pregnancy testing and options counseling, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, and confidential HIV testing and counseling. PPNNE's Fair Care program offers health care on a sliding fee scale, ensuring that all patients receive care regardless of their ability to pay.

Thanks to the continued support of many dedicated individuals, businesses and organizations throughout York County, this year, the United Way is investing in 78 community programs serving children, youth, adults and families.

"Despite economic uncertainty in 2010, local people gave very generously to our United Way community campaign," said United Way of York County President and CEO Kathryn Davis. "As a result, in 2011 we are able to provide much needed support for essential human services across the region."
