SACRAMENTO – “In the weeks and months to come, we expect to be under attack on several fronts by the new Trump/Pence Administration, “ said Kathy Kneer, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California. “It will be more important than ever to stand together to ensure Planned Parenthood’s doors stay open and that our health centers continue to provide care for the communities who need us most —– low-income women, immigrants, people of color, the LGBTQ community, and more. That’s why we applaud the California Legislative Women’s Caucus’ action– the first day of the 2017-18 Session -- in introducing resolutions supporting our cause and pledging to fight all federal attempts to shut our doors.”
"The proposed federal defunding of Planned Parenthood, the repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the proposals to dismantle Medi-Cal -- all of these are direct attacks on Planned Parenthood and the health of all Californians,” said Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara).
“Planned Parenthood provides contraception and reproductive care, STD screenings and treatment, prenatal and primary care and thousands of life-saving cancer screenings to more than 850,000 Californians – we will not allow their health centers to be closed and their clients to go without this critical care,” said Assemblymember Autumn Burke (D-Inglewood).
Two resolutions – one in the State Senate and one in the State Assembly were introduced concurrently by California Legislative Women’s Caucus Chair Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) and Senator Connie Leyva (D-Chino), along with Women’s Caucus Vice-Chair Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens) and Assemblymember Autumn Burke (D-Inglewood). These resolutions are expected to be adopted soon after the Legislature reconvenes in January.
“We must stand together,” said Kneer, “and begin to raise our collective voices so that they can be heard by those in Washington D.C. who have pledged to shut us down. One in five women in America have used Planned Parenthood in their lives. Their voices and those of leaders like the California Legislative Women’s Caucus must keep getting louder as our determination grows. Together, we are strong. We are powerful. And we are never giving up. No matter what.”
