Planned Parenthood: Shasta-Diablo Redding Center and local youth will Carol for Cans in an effort to fill the HIV Food Bank!

Redding, CA - Planned Parenthood: Shasta-Diablo's Peer Education Group will be Caroling for Cans in local Redding neighborhoods December 19, 2008 from 5:30-8:00pm in an effort to stock the HIV Food Bank shelves during the holiday season.

December 1st marked World AIDS Day and in an effort to raise awareness around HIV/AIDS, the Peer Education Group focuses on providing accurate information on reproductive health topics to the community and their peers, encouraging healthy lifestyles and decision making.  The youth hope to contribute to the HIV Food Bank and the individuals living with HIV in our community by taking to the Redding streets to Carol for Cans.  The food bank serves over 150 individuals in the community and has recently seen a decline in donations for food.

HIV Food Bank Coordinator Steve Haight says, "There are a lot of people who need this food to stay healthy and we've seen an increase in numbers of people who are coming to the food bank."

Shasta County Public Health reports that there are 275 HIV positive individuals receiving treatment and care in Shasta County, but they project up to 475 individuals are living with the virus in the county.

For those wishing to contribute monetary or food donations to the HIV Food Bank can drop off any donations at Planned Parenthood (2935 Bechelli Lane, Redding, CA. 96002.)  For more information regarding the HIV Food Bank call Steve Haight at (530) 275-1711.
