Planned Parenthood of New York City Congratulates Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie on Election as New York State Assembly Speaker
Statement by Joan Malin, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of New York City
NEW YORK — Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) congratulates Assembly Member Carl Heastie on his historic election as Speaker of the New York State Assembly. As the first African-American Speaker, Assembly Member Heastie’s leadership will provide an important perspective and voice in Albany.
The New York State Assembly has a long history of support for sexual and reproductive health and rights. With Speaker Heastie’s leadership, we are confident that this legacy will continue. We appreciate the Assembly Member’s support for the Boss Bill so that women are not discriminated against for their reproductive health decisions. His vote to end condoms as evidence of prostitution would improve public health by removing barriers to New Yorkers carrying condoms to protect themselves and others. We also are thankful for his support of the Women’s Equality Agenda, which recognizes the importance of updating New York's laws to reflect the reality of women's lives, including helping survivors of domestic violence, ensuring fair pay and treatment at work, and protecting women's ability to make their own health care decisions.
PPNYC looks forward to working closely with the new Speaker in ensuring that all New Yorkers have access to essential health care services and education, regardless of income, insurance status or immigration status.
Since 1916, Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) has been an advocate for and provider of reproductive health services and education for New Yorkers. Serving nearly 50,000 clients annually, PPNYC’s health care centers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island offer reproductive health services, including gynecological care, contraception, pregnancy testing, abortion, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, and HIV testing and counseling. Through a threefold mission of clinical services, education, and advocacy, PPNYC brings better health and more fulfilling lives to each new generation of New Yorkers. As a voice for reproductive freedom, PPNYC supports legislation and policies to ensure that all New Yorkers—and, in fact, people around the world—will have access to the full range of reproductive health care services and information.
