Planned Parenthood of New York City Applauds Historic Gender-Neutral Bathroom Bill

Statement by Joan Malin, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of New York City

NEW YORK, NY – Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) applauds Mayor Bill de Blasio, Council Member Daniel Dromm, Council Member Corey Johnson and the entire New York City Council for their leadership in advancing gender equity and enacting legislation to mandate all single-occupancy bathrooms in New York City be made gender-neutral. This bill will create opportunity and dignity for all New Yorkers, especially transgender and gender nonconforming communities.

On June 21, by a vote of 47-2, the New York City Council passed a bill that will require all New York City single-stall bathrooms to become gender-neutral and no longer carry “male” or “female” designations. By making single-occupant bathrooms available to persons of any gender, this common-sense bill will enhance the safety and dignity of transgender and gender nonconforming New Yorkers.

70 percent of transgender and gender nonconforming persons have experienced being denied access to restrooms, or have been harassed or physically assaulted while using restrooms. It is significantly harder for a person who does not have access to something as basic as a restroom to lead a safe and healthy life. As anti-trans legislation is implemented in states like North Carolina and around the country, we are proud to stand behind a bill in our city that supports LGBTQ rights and fights back against discrimination.

Nobody should face the threat of harassment or physical violence for needing to use a restroom. This bill is an important step towards becoming a more welcoming city for all, and we hope that it will lead other cities to pass similar legislation.
