Planned Parenthood of New York City Will Begin Offering PrEP, Daily Drug Regimen to Help Prevent HIV
NEW YORK, NY – Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) will begin offering PrEP on August 8 at its Manhattan health center and at all five health centers by the end of 2016. PrEP, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, is a treatment plan that involves a daily pill called Truvada that can help those at increased risk avoid HIV. When taken daily, the risk of contracting HIV can be reduced by more than 90 percent.
"PrEP is an important tool in the prevention of HIV transmission and PPNYC is thrilled to begin offering PrEP as part of our comprehensive health care services,” says Joan Malin, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of New York City.
Truvada contains two antiretroviral medicines that interfere with HIV’s ability to grow and take hold in the body once one is exposed to the virus. PrEP is even more effective when combined with condoms and other prevention options.
Currently, there are more than 110,000 people in New York City living with HIV. NYC's rate of HIV prevalence is nearly five times the nation's rate, and twice New York State's rate. Women of color are disproportionately at risk of contracting HIV.
"At PPNYC, we have been committed to reducing the transmission of HIV through affordable or free HIV testing and education programs. With the inclusion of PrEP as part of our services, we feel we can better meet the needs of the communities we serve,” Malin continued.
PrEP is covered by Medicaid and most insurance programs. For anyone who is uninsured or under-insured, PPNYC can help find a payment option that will work for them. More information about PrEP is available at www.ppnyc.org. Appointments can be scheduled at 212-965-7000.
