Planned Parenthood of New York City Highlights PrEP for Women on World AIDS Day
All Five PPNYC Health Centers—One in Each Borough—Now Provide PrEP, a Daily Medication to Prevent HIV Transmission
NEW YORK – On World AIDS Day, Planned Parenthood of New York City is announcing that it now offers pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in all five of its health centers—one in each borough. PrEP is a daily medication that provides a high level of protection against HIV.
New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) just announced that rates of new HIV diagnoses in NYC have reached a record low. However, despite the decreases overall and among men who have sex with men, there was an increase among women since 2015—and Black and Latina women make up more than 90 percent of cases.
“Planned Parenthood of New York City and our community partners are at the front lines of fighting HIV/AIDS in NYC, and we will not stop fighting until we end HIV/AIDS for good,” said Laura McQuade, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of New York City. “On World AIDS Day, we’re thrilled to roll out PrEP at our Queens health center, which means that all five of our centers provide PrEP. We’re committed to making sure women know about PrEP. PrEP historically has been marketed to cis men who have sex with men--it’s essential that women know that it’s an option for them as well.”
PrEP prescriptions and usage have increased across NYC but, similarly to HIV diagnosis rates, disparities exist, especially among women of color. DOHMH released data in October showing that PrEP prescribing rose a striking 976% between 2014 and 2016 in NYC, according to data from 602 medical practices in NYC. The same data showed that prescriptions increased primarily among younger white men in Manhattan, and to a much lesser degree among women, Black men, older New Yorkers, and people outside Manhattan.
In addition to providing PrEP in all PPNYC health centers, PPNYC has incorporated PrEP into its “Your Body Needs You” social marketing campaign, an innovative STI/HIV prevention and treatment campaign created by and for women of color in the Bronx and Brooklyn that empowers women to take control of their health. PPNYC now has “Your Body Needs You” posters with information about PrEP in laundromats and nail salons in the Bronx.
Since 1916, Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) has been an advocate for and provider of reproductive health services and education for New Yorkers. Serving more than 60,000 clients annually, PPNYC’s health care centers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island offer reproductive health services, including gynecological care, contraception, pregnancy testing, abortion, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, and HIV testing and counseling. Through a threefold mission of clinical services, education, and advocacy, PPNYC brings better health and more fulfilling lives to each new generation of New Yorkers. As a voice for reproductive freedom, PPNYC supports legislation and policies to ensure that all New Yorkers will have access to the full range of reproductive health care services and information.
